Polk County’s Preston Burnett recorded the best finish Saturday by a Polk County wrestler in four years at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1A wrestling tournament.
Burnett reached the consolation semifinals in the 126-pound class before losing a 7-3 decision to Alleghany’s Evan Wagoner. Burnett is the first to advance to that level, which places him among the top six wrestlers in the state, since Chase Emory did so in 2015.
Polk County’s Trey Thompson lost his opening consolation round match on Saturday, falling to East Surry’s Joseph Becker. Thompson finished in the top eight in the state by reaching the state tournament.
Burnett opened consolation competition on Saturday with an 8-4 decision over Uwharrie Charter’s Timmy Blake.
