Wolverines sweep 1A conference foes during road trip

Polk County swept both its 1A rivals in the Western Highlands Conference, downing Avery and Mitchell in recent conference volleyball meetings.

The Wolverines knocked off Avery 25-14, 25-22, 25-9 on Thursday in Newland, then traveled to Ledger on Tuesday and claimed a 25-13, 15-9, 25-8 victory.

Polk County improved to 5-7, 2-1 with the two wins. The Wolverines host WHC co-leader Mountain Heritage (3-7, 2-0) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Grace Lauer had 11 kills and three blocks at Avery, with Mireya Roman adding six kills. Marilyn Castillo finished with five kills while Ansley Lynch had 20 digs. Sydney Waldman notched 27 assists and nine digs.

Waldman finished with 32 assists, four digs and six aces at Mitchell, with Lauer adding eight kills and two blocks. Meadow Becker finished with six kills and five blocks, Kristen Hall had seven kills and six digs and Lynch finished with nine digs, five aces and a kill.
