Unbeaten Lions subdue Wolverines in matchup of 2024 state champs

Undefeated Asheville Christian Academy continued its impressive run Wednesday evening, taking down Polk County in four sets in a non-conference matchup at Polk County.

The visiting Lions, now 10-0 on the season and defending NCISAA state champions, earned a 25-17, 25-8, 11-25, 25-16 win and demonstrated why they remain unbeaten, particularly during a dominant second set.

Polk County (3-2), defending NCHSAA 1A champions, showed resilience in the third set, storming back with a convincing win before ACA regained control to close out the match.

Beija Olivari led the Wolverines’ offense with 12 kills while adding a block and an ace in one of her strongest performances of the season. Akeela Cunningham, who entered the match averaging 11.3 kills per game, contributed eight kills and 11 digs.

The Wolverines’ back-row defense saw solid contributions from sophomore Reeve Carroll, who recorded a team-high 16 digs along with two kills and an ace. Abby Lewis directed the offense with 16 assists while adding six digs and two aces.

Despite the loss, several Wolverines exceeded their season averages, including Aslyn Scruggs, who recorded two aces and nine digs in the defensive effort.

The Wolverines will look to bounce back as they open Western Highlands Conference play on Tuesday, hosting Mitchell in what marks the beginning of their conference schedule.
