Tuesday roundup: High school soccer, volleyball earn wins

Polk County’s volleyball squad picked up an important conference road win on Tuesday, sweeping Mitchell in three games in Western Highlands Conference action.

Sarah Phipps had 12 kills and 16 digs to help lead Polk to a 25-22, 25-11, 25-11 victory. Cassidy Campbell added six blocks, Addie Lynch had five kills and five aces and junior setter Kara Overholt finished with 32 assists and three kills.

After splitting two matches on Saturday at the Rosman Think Pink tournament, Polk’s record is now 9-6 overall, 7-2 in WHC play. The Wolverines travel Wednesday to North Buncome.

High School Soccer

Polk County rolled to a 7-0 win over Mitchell in a match originally slated for the road, but moved to Polk Middle.

The Wolverines opened a 3-0 halftime lead and went on to post their best offensive showing of the season.

Now 3-8 overall, 3-2 in conference play, Polk is slated to host Madison Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Polk Middle School.

Middle School Tennis

Polk Middle dropped a 9-0 decision to a talented Veritas Christian Academy squad at PCMS.

Gabe Petoia picked up a victory in exhibition singles play for the Wolverines, who host Veritas on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Middle School Soccer

Haley Fowler just missed a season-best time in cracking the top 10 in a 12-team meet at Jackson Park in Hendersonville.

Fowler finished the course in 14:24, only a second off her best time set earlier this season at Brevard, to place seventh in the individual competition. The Polk Middle girls placed eighth as a team.

Al Russell ran a 13:30 to finish 13th and lead the Polk Middle boys, who finished ninth in the boys event.
