Polk County will continue its efforts in the state 2A volleyball playoffs on Thursday, traveling to face Wheatmore in a 6 p.m. match.

The Warriors enter with a 23-3 record and are seeded second in the 2A West bracket. Wheatmore won the 2A East regional last season before falling to Hendersonville in the 2A state title match. Wheatmore advanced to Thursday’s game with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-10 win over Surry Central on Tuesday.

The Warriors have won 13 straight matches, all 3-0 sweeps, since a Sept. 20 loss to Cedar Ridge. Wheatmore is led by 5-9 senior hitter Georgia Garrison, who has recorded at least 12 kills in every match this season except that loss to Cedar Ridge, 5-10 sophomore Macy Eidenberger and 5-11 junior Davey Albertson, third on the team in kills and the team’s top blocker. Freshman Krista Tuggle is the team’s setter.

Wheatmore is in its sixth year of operation and has quickly established itself as one of the top 2A programs in the state. The Warriors have won four straight PAC-6 Conference regular season and tournament titles and have qualified for the playoffs all six seasons. Last year’s state tournament final appearance was the school’s first.

Polk County, the seventh seed in the West, has won nine straight matches, including a four-set win over defending state champion Hendersonville to earn a share of the Western Highlands Conference regular season title.

“I told the girls that we should be focused on our goal, which obviously is to go to state,” said Polk County head coach Molly Hill after Tuesday’s second-round win over Salisbury. “From here on out, the competition is going to get tougher. We can’t be selfish. The team has to come before any individual goals. We have to make that really important if we want to keep on winning, and this team absolutely can do that.”

Wheatmore High School is located in Trinity, with an address of 3678 Finch Farm Rd. Drivers should take I-85 north to exit 106, then keep right at the fork to be on Finch Farm Road.
