Polk County Middle upped its record to 5-1 on Wednesday, sweeping Flat Rock Middle in a Blue Ridge Middle School Conference volleyball match at Polk.
The Wolverines notched a 25-20, 25-19 victory. Polk Middle’s fifth quarter team also emerged victorious, winning 25-23.
Though now 2-4, Flat Rock is part of an East Division that has proven extremely strong this season. Polk County currently is in second place in the East, just behind Rugby.
“This is the best Flat Rock team we’ve played since I started coaching at PCMS,” said Polk Middle head coach Matthew Russell. “We got out to a hot start in the first set, taking a 7-1 lead on the back of a couple of Emmie McDowell aces and Kristen Hall kills, forcing Flat Rock to take a timeout. Hitting errors and lack of movement helped keep the game close but we were able to close out the first set with Kristen Hall serving the last three points.
“We came out flat in the second set, trailing 7-6 before getting a kill from Kristen Hall. We wouldn’t trail again in the set, going on a 9-4 run to help stretch the lead. We had some nice kills from Marilyn Castillo and Marissa Twitty down the stretch and Kylee Mullis served the clinching point for us.”
Polk Middle hosts West Division team Bethel Middle on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
