Polk County Middle rallied Monday to top an always-tough Brevard team 2-1 in a Blue Ridge Middle School Conference volleyball match in Brevard.
The Wolverines improved to 2-0 with a 19-25, 25-17, 25-18 win over the Blue Demons, who handed Polk Middle its only loss last season.
“All credit in the world goes to Brevard. They are always well coached and ready to play and they tested us in a big way today,” said Polk Middle head coach Matthew Russell. “We had seven first-set service errors and gave them a big chunk of points. We regrouped in the second set and our libero, Rollins Carter, stepped in and came through in a big way. We were struggling to find anyone to serve it over and we went on a run of eight straight points with her serving.
“This game was clearly a wake up call for our girls and just reinforced what we’ve been saying to them from the beginning – we have to come out with energy and purpose to start every game if we want this to be a special season.”
Polk’s fifth quarter team earned a 25-18 win.
The Wolverines hold their home opener on Wednesday, and it promises to be a good one as Rugby Middle visits Polk for a 4:30 p.m. match. The two teams met in last season’s conference championship game, with Polk Middle winning.
