Polk County Middle School survived a challenge from Brevard Middle on Wednesday to earn a 2-1 win over the Blue Devils in Blue Ridge Middle School Conference volleyball action at Polk Middle.

The Wolverines earned a 25-19, 25-27, 25-18 win to improve to 2-0 on the season.

“This win is on the players,” said Polk Middle coach Matthew Russell. “They got down early in all three sets but showed a lot of toughness and resolve to fight back like they did. Brevard never let up, were well-coached and put pressure on us with their serves. Timely serving and being more vocal on the floor played a part in our turnaround. Days like today are why you play the game.”

Polk County also earned a 25-23 win in fifth-quarter play, scoring the final four points of the match to rally for the victory.

Polk Middle is back in action on Monday, hosting Rugby Middle in a rematch of last season’s Blue Ridge tourney championship game.

“It’s a confidence booster for us and we will enjoy the win, but tomorrow we set our sights toward Rugby,” Russell said. “I’ll have my work cut out for me in getting our girls ready for Rugby, as they are talented and well-coached.”
