“The girls took it upon themselves to come out firing in the second and they did just that,” Russell said. “Increased effort and communication led to a big second-set win.”

Flat Rock built a 6-1 lead to open the final set, but Polk Middle rallied behind the serving of Reece Alley. Polk still trailed 23-22 before Ansley Lynch delivered a kill and a service ace to give the Wolverines the lead, and Mireya Roman blocked a Flat Rock shot at the net for the final point.

“I’m so proud of the girls and the fight they showed today,” Russell said. “It may have been our best effort of the season. Our serves were better across the board and the girls showed a real toughness that we hadn’t seen before.”

Polk Middle closes its season with a 7-5 record and will now await the pairings for the Blue Ridge postseason tournament to learn its first playoff opponent.

The Polk Middle fifth quarter squad also won Wednesday, taking a 25-23 win.
