Polk Middle sweeps Hendersonville to claim share of division title

2 min read

Polk County Middle capped a dominant regular season Wednesday, sweeping Hendersonville Middle 2-0 (25-11, 25-10) to clinch a share of the Blue Ridge Conference East Division regular-season championship.

The Wolverines (12-1) extended their winning streak to four matches while handing the Bearcats (3-9) a loss in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Polk Middle now turns its attention to the BRC tournament, where it will seek to build on the momentum of a season that saw the Wolverines lose only to co-division winner Rugby Middle.

Wednesday’s match quickly turned in Polk’s favor during the first set. After falling behind 6-4, the Wolverines erupted for 13 consecutive points, with Alia Vorbe serving 12 straight during the decisive run. The onslaught gave Polk a 17-6 advantage and effectively put the set out of reach en route to the win.

Polk carried that momentum into the second set. With the score knotted at 5-4, the Wolverines reeled off six straight points to seize control. After Hendersonville briefly stopped the bleeding, Polk forced side outs on four consecutive Bearcat serves to build a commanding 17-7 lead.

The Wolverines closed out the match in emphatic fashion, scoring the final eight points to complete the sweep and secure the conference title.

“I’m very proud of this team in how they’ve handled the end of the regular season,” Polk Middle head coach Kenny Hall said. “After the loss they’ve come back more determined than ever to fix physical and mental mistakes. The job now is to prepare for a deep run in the tournament.”

Hall also praised the program’s depth and development throughout the season.

“Our JV program has had yet another highly successful season and I want to thank Coach Mike Pace for his leadership with that team,” he said.

The Polk junior varsity closed its season with a 25-14 victory.
