2 min read

Polk County Middle has secured at least a share of the Blue Ridge Conference East Division championship.

The Wolverines put themselves in that position Wednesday with a dominant 25-9, 25-9 victory over Flat Rock Middle at Polk County Middle.

Polk began creating separation midway through the opening set. Leading 11-6, the Wolverines scored six straight points, with Hadley Pereira serving the final five of that run to push the advantage to 17-6.

Flat Rock stopped that surge, but couldn’t mount a comeback. Polk eventually closed the set with four straight points, with Tilly Harris serving the final three, to finish the 25-9 win.

The second set ended with an even larger Polk run.

Flat Rock trailed 17-9 before the Wolverines scored the final eight points of the match. Polk earned the sideout for the first point of that run, then Izzy Irwin served seven consecutive points to complete another 25-9 victory.

The win improved Polk Middle to 12-1 overall and guaranteed the Wolverines at least a tie for the East Division title with one conference match remaining. Polk can secure the championship outright in Monday’s regular-season finale at home against Hendersonville Middle.

Polk’s JV squad was just as dominant Wednesday, defeating Flat Rock 25-6. Miroslava Castillo-Ibarra served 13 consecutive points during a 14-0 Polk run that broke the set open, with Camden Smith later serving the final three points after Polk regained serve.
