Polk Middle stays in tie for first with win at Brevard Middle

2 min read

Polk County Middle School set the stage for a conference showdown next week with Rugby, going on the road Wednesday and defeating Brevard Middle School 25-19, 25-23.

The Wolverines (7-1) remained tied atop the Blue Ridge Middle School Conference East Division with Rugby, who visits Polk County on Monday for a 4:30 p.m. match.

Brevard (6-2), which recently handed Rugby its only loss of the season, looked to avenge a loss earlier this season to Polk Middle. But the Wolverines put together one of their best performances of the season, according to head coach Matthew Russell.

“This was the most intense match we’ve had all season and, honestly, our fifth quarter team set the tone for us,” Russell said. “They came out with great energy and focus and our regulation team fed off that.

“We have been preaching energy, communication and drive this week in practice and I’m very pleased with the way the girls responded today against a tough opponent.”

After winning the first set, the teams traded points throughout the second game. With the score tied at 23, Mireya Roman got a huge kill off a set from Sydney Waldman, then served an ace to end the match.

“Coach (Donna) Hall and I are so proud of the effort from all of our girls today and we will enjoy this win. But come tomorrow, our attention will be turned fully towards Rugby,” Russell said.
