Polk County Middle School will gear up for the start of the 2020 volleyball season with a series of open gym workouts before the start of tryouts.

The school will offer open gym on Oct. 22-23 and Oct. 29-30. These periods are designed for potential players to work on their skills prior to the start of tryouts. No coaching will be allowed, but coaches will be present to supervise the girls in attendance.

Anyone interested in attending open gym must do so based on their last name as players will be split into two groups to adhere to state guidelines. Students with a last name beginning with letters A-K (Group A) can attend open gym on Oct. 22 and Oct. 29 from 3:30-5 p.m. Students with a last name beginning with letters L-Z (Group B) can attend open gym on Oct. 23 and Oct. 30 from 3:30-5 p.m.

Official tryouts will be held Nov. 4-5. using the following schedule:

  • Nov. 4: Group A, 3:20-4:50 p.m.; Group B, 5-6:30 p.m.
  • Nov. 5: Group B, 3:20-4:50 p.m.; Group A, 5-6:30 p.m.

All potential players must have a physical and signed concussion form on file before being allowed to try out. Anyone with questions about either form can contact John Ruth at jruth@polkschools.org.

Varsity and junior varsity teams will be announced on the school website by 8 p.m. on Nov. 5. Practice will then begin on Nov. 6, with the first game set for Nov. 16.
