Polk County Middle School’s volleyball team faced its stiffest challenge of the season Monday but emerged with its perfect record intact, rallying past Brevard Middle 2-1 in a key Blue Ridge Conference East Division showdown.

The Wolverines (6-0) dropped the opening set 25-17 before bouncing back to claim the match with 25-14, 15-12 victories in the final two sets, handing Brevard (2-3) its first division loss of the season.

The win moved Polk County Middle into sole possession of first place in the Blue Ridge Conference East Division.

After a challenging first set, the Wolverines found their rhythm in the second, turning a 7-5 deficit into an 11-7 advantage with six straight points. That run proved to be the turning point as Polk continued to build momentum, extending the lead to 15-8 and eventually 19-11 before closing out the set.

The decisive third set provided plenty of drama. Polk County built a 10-6 lead, only to see Brevard battle back and tie the score at 10-10. The Wolverines regrouped to pull ahead 14-11, then withstood one final Brevard push before securing the match-winning point at 15-12.

“A really tough test today,” said Polk Middle head coach Kenny Hall. “They had a few good servers that gave us fits on receive. We didn’t have our best day but we survived. It was good to see what kind of toughness this team has.”

In junior varsity action, Polk Middle captured a 25-22 victory.

The Wolverines return to action Wednesday, hosting Flat Rock Middle at 4:30 p.m.
