Polk County Middle handed previously unbeaten Rugby Middle its first loss Monday, using strong passing and a balanced attack to earn a 25-13, 25-18 sweep in Mills River.
The Wolverines controlled much of the opening set. Izzy Irwin helped Polk create early separation with a six-point serving run, and the Wolverines eventually built a 20-8 advantage before closing out the 25-13 victory.
Rugby, which entered the match 2-0, stayed closer in the second set, but Polk again found enough offense to pull away and complete the sweep.
“Our passing today was about as good as it gets,” Polk Middle coach Kenny Hall said. “It gave us multiple opportunities to put it away at the net. We’re still working on building that winning mentality and being a more consistent serving team.”
The victory improved Polk Middle to 3-0. The Wolverines are scheduled to return home Wednesday to face Apple Valley Middle.
Polk Middle’s JV squad also won Monday, edging Rugby 26-24 in its one-set match.
