A second-set deficit proved no problem Monday for Polk County Middle to overcome.
The Wolverines rallied in what proved to be the clinching set to hand Canton Middle a 2-0 setback in the season opener for both teams at Polk Middle.
Polk scored a 25-15, 25-23 victory in its season debut. The Wolverines are next in action on Wednesday, traveling to Asheville Christian.
After Polk pulled away in the first set, closing on a serving run by Cate Brown, Canton grabbed an early lead in the second set and continued to stretch the margin.
But Polk’s serving strength sparked a comeback from a 21-13 deficit. Jessie Bradley served four straight winning points and Ava Evans followed with a run of six straight points that moved Polk in front 24-22. The teams then swapped points, with the final one securing the Wolverines’ victory.
“We were down by about 10 points late in the second set and the strong serving of Jessie Bradley and Ava Evans brought us back for the victory,” said Polk Middle head coach Kenny Hall.
“It’s always good to get that first win of the season.”
