Polk County's Thais Vorbe winds up to deliver a serve during Wednesday's match.

Polk County’s junior varsity staged a rally Wednesday and then stopped one.

The Wolverines dropped the opening set of their home opener to Enka, but then rallied to win the final two sets and claim a 2-1 victory in a non-conference volleyball matchup.

Polk County (3-2) took a 19-25, 25-17, 15-13 win, with Enka (2-1) making the third set a thriller.

The Wolverines grabbed a quick 5-1 lead on the strenght of Hayden Blackwell’s serving, then extended the lead to 11-4. A Thais Vorbe kill made it 13-5, and an Akeela Cunningham kill from the right side gave Polk a 14-7 lead and match point.

But Enka fought to keep the match alive, scoring the next six points to pull within 14-13. But the Jets misplayed a shot on the next point, giving Polk the victory.

Lexi Beiler had nine kills and 13 digs for Polk County, with Charley Dusenbury and Hayden Blackwell each adding six kills and Blackwell also recording 10 assists and 13 digs.

Cunningham had four kills and 10 digs, plus a fine rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner before the varsity game. Junie Mitchell had a team-high 12 assists and Aslyn Scruggs finished wirh 10 assists.

Polk is slated to be be back in action on Monday, traveling to A.C. Reynolds.
