Owen rallies late to edge Polk JV in conference opener

Polk County’s junior varsity volleyball team stood one point away from opening Western Highlands Conference play with a victory Thursday.

Owen found a way to deny it.

The Warhorses rallied from a 14-11 deficit in the deciding set, scoring the final five points to escape with a 26-24, 22-25, 16-14 victory at Polk County.

The Wolverines battled through an extended opening set before Owen finally prevailed 26-24. Polk answered in the second, taking a 25-22 win to force the deciding set.

Polk led for much of the third and moved to match point with a 14-11 advantage. But Owen fought off three chances to end the match and continued its run, scoring five straight points to complete the comeback.

ScottLynn Whiteside led Polk County at the net with 10 kills and added seven digs. Alia Vorbe had seven kills, 17 digs and six aces.

Camdyn Israel-Garrett finished with 16 assists and 17 digs, while Lily Holt led the Wolverines defensively with 23 digs.

The loss dropped Polk County to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in Western Highlands Conference play. The Wolverines travel to Mitchell on Tuesday.
