Polk County Middle School’s boys soccer squad remained unbeaten on Tuesday, rolling to a 5-1 win over Rugby Middle in Mills River.

The Wolverines are now 3-0 on the season.

Head coach Travis Aldred said the team started slowly, but picked up the pace in the second half to pull away for the win.

In volleyball, Polk Middle dropped a tough 26-24, 25-13 decision to Rugby Middle, the defending Blue Ridge Middle School Conference champions.

The Wolverines (2-1) led 24-22 in the opening set and had a chance to serve to win the set, but were unable to get match point as the Raiders rallied with four straight points to close the set.

“We still have a ways to go but we were certainly more competitive against Rugby this year than last year,” said Polk Middle head coach Matthew Russell. “We know that if we want a banner we have to go through them so we’ll get back to the drawing board and hit it hard during the upcoming weeks of practices.”
