Face coverings required for fans attending volleyball playoff match at East Gaston

Polk County fans attending Saturday’s state volleyball playoff match at East Gaston will be required to wear a face covering while in the East Gaston gym.

Gaston County Schools currently requires face masks to be worn in all school buildings in the district. The Gaston County school board voted Monday to extend that requirement into November due to the high number of positive COVID-19 cases in the county, though that number has begun dropping since the district enacted its masking requirement.

Gaston County Superintendent Jeffrey Booker did announce at that meeting that athletes would be allowed to compete without wearing a face covering moving forward.

The first-round match at East Gaston begins Saturday at 1 p.m.
