Blue Devils snap Wolverines’ streak, force split of MF7 volleyball title
Brevard ended Polk County’s 18-match winning streak Thursday, defeating the Wolverines 3-1 in a matchup of Mountain Foothills 7 Conference powers in Brevard.
The Blue Devils (15-4, 11-1) earned a share of the MF7 regular-season title with the win. Polk County ends its regular season as co-champions with a 20-2, 11-1 record.
The Brevard win also means increased stakes on the line in next week’s conference tournament. Whichever team has the better finish in the league tourney will earn the conference’s top seed for the state 2A playoffs and will likely be a top-four seed in the 2A West bracket while the other team will likely be seeded 12th.
PCHS athletic director DeShane Briscoe said a drawing will be held Saturday to determine which team is the top seed for the tournament. That team will get a first-round bye and would host a potential championship rematch. The loser of the draw will be the second seed and will open tournament play on Monday against Chase.
Brevard took a 25-17, 25-16, 21-25, 25-15 win.
Morgan Yoder had six kills and three blocks Thursday for Polk, with Elena Carroll adding five kills and Sophia Overholt finishing with five kills and 17 digs.
Zaelea Eller had 13 assists and 10 digs, with Amberlyn Scruggs recording 10 assists and three digs. Ella Waldman added nine digs while Ada Kelley had eight digs and four kills.
