Area volleyball powers to gather at Polk for final preseason scrimmage

Four of Western North Carolina’s top volleyball programs will gather Wednesday at Polk County for a final preseason scrimmage.

Brevard, Cherokee and West Henderson will join Polk County for the scrimmage, which begins at 3:30 p.m. and will include two courts of varsity and junior varsity action.

Each team will face the other three teams in a 30-minute match.

Polk County will take part in its final tuneup before Monday’s season opener against East Rutherford. The Wolverines will look to build on last year’s 15-12 record with a group of returnees led bu Reeve Carroll, Beija Olivari, Abby Lewis and Elena Greve.

Brevard welcomes back head coach Cori Bryson, who led the Blue Devils to the 2023 state 3A title before stepping aside for the past two seasons. Seniors Kynna McCall and Macy Rogers headline a large group of returnees from last year’s 20-11 squad.

Cherokee comes off a 27-9 season and reached the state 2A quarterfinals before falling to eventual state champion Community School of Davidson. The Braves lost state Female Athlete of the Year Dvdaya Swimmer to graduation, but return senior standout Joscelyn Stamper as well as fellow senior Daisee Fourkiller-Raby and sophomore Cambry Stamper.

West Henderson notched a 25-7 record last season and advanced to the 5A state quarterfinals before falling to Oak Grove. Ella Collier heads the group of returnees for the Falcons.
