Polk County’s indoor track and field program will have to wait one more year to compete for a conference championship.
With winter weather plaguing recent practices as well as travel, Western Highlands Conference coaches decided not to proceed with Thursday’s scheduled conference meet at Tryon International Equestrian Center. Coaches also decided not to hold a virtual meet based on top performances from the season.
So what would have been the first indoor track and field championship meet in Polk County history instead didn’t happen.

Polk County athletes still competed Thursday at TIEC, their last chance to post top marks before the field is set for Wednesday’s state 3A championship meet in Winston-Salem. Unlike years past, this year’s state meet will include the top 12 entries in relay and individual events. Deadline for entries is Saturday.
Sam Rhein led the Wolverine boys with three top-five finishes, placing third in the long jump (20-3.5), fourth in the shot put (39-6) and fifth in the triple jump (40-1). Danny Bradley finished fifth in the 300 meters (39.23), sixth in the 55 meters (7.10) and seventh (7.15).
Jesse Moore placed sixth in the long jump (18-3.75) and seventh in the 55 meters (7.10). Logan Baird took eighth in the high jump (5-4), and William Finch finished eighth in the 3,200 meters (12:06.54) and 17th in the 1,600 (5:58.52). Drew Young placed 19th in the 1,000 meters (3:22.88).
Caleb Young and Austin Martin tied for 13th in the pole vault (8-0), and Jayvin Clark finished 15th (7-6). Jadyn Bramer placed ninth in the shot put (22-1).
The boys 4×200 relay team finished second (1:46.51) and the 4×800 relay placed sixth (9:47.71).
For the girls, Leah Dotson placed third in the pole vault (7-6). Alaysia Hamrick finished third in the 55 meters (8.41) and 14th in the 300 (53.03). Renee Bright took sixth in the 55-meter hurdles (11.09) and seventh in the 500 meters (1:41.17).
Adrianne Dyson placed seventh in the 55 meters (9.20). Brianna Dyson finished eighth in the shot put (22-9.5), and Minda McComas took 12th (17-6).
Kendra Kitchen placed 10th in the 1,000 meters (5:17.71) and ninth in the 3,200 (19:47.77). Sadie Schweitzer finished eighth in the 3,200 (16:42.32) and 12th in the 1,600 (7:22.56).
The girls 4×200 relay team finished fourth (2:24.93) and the 4×800 relay placed second (14:57.43).
