State 1A track and field championships: Live updates

A handful of Polk County athletes are competing in Friday’s state 1A track and field championships at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro.

PolkSports will offer updates throughout the day as events complete:

Girls 800-meter run: Polk County senior Karsyn Huskey finished second in the 800-meter run for the Wolverines’ best showing of the day.

Huskey finished in 2:17.50, trailing only Swain’s Annie Lewis, who won the race in a time of 2:15.23.

Boys 400-meter run: Polk County’s Blake Anderson placed 11th in a time of 52.79.

Colten Smith of Northside won the race in a time of 48.02.

Girls 4×100-meter relay: Running in the first of two heats, Polk County’s team of Aklya Cunnigham, Sophia Overholt, Bailey Staton and Sophia Wood finished sixth in the heat and 14th overall with a time of 53.19.

Mountain Island Charter won the event with a time of 47.86, setting a new meet record. Corvian Community and Perquimans rounded out the top three

Girls shot put: Polk County senior Kiera Littlejohn placed fifth in the shot with a best throw of 34-1 3/4.

Littlejohn’s first four throws were in the 31-32-foot range before she uncorked her best effort on her next-to-last throw.

Eastern Randolph’s Mirianna Corea won the event with a throw of 38-6.

Girls high jump: Polk County senior Mia Bradley claimed seventh place in the event, clearing 4-10.

Wilson Prep’s Rachel Key won the competition with a top leap of 5-8, matching the state meet record. Key passed on every height until making her first attempt at 5-2. By that time, only six competitors remained, and only Swain’s Gracie Sutton cleared 5-2.

Sutton failed at 5-4, which Key cleared on her first try. She successfully cleared every succeeding height until failing at 5-10.
