Rhein snares top seed in long jump to lead Polk state track qualifiers

Polk County will have 12 qualifying entries in Wednesday’s NCHSAA 3A Indoor Track & Field State Championships at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.

Sam Rhein leads the Wolverine boys with three individual entries, ranking as the top seed in the long jump and third seed in the triple jump while also competing in the shot put. Rhein enters the long jump with a season-best mark of 21 feet, six inches ahead of second-seeded Christian Ferebee of Northeastern. His triple jump mark of 41-7.5 trails only Jayden Quesenberry of West Caldwell (43-8) and Ferebee (43-0).

Rhein also enters as the eighth seed in the shot put with a throw of 39-6.

Danny Bradley qualified for the 300-meter dash as the sixth seed with a time of 36.38 seconds. Jesse Moore joins Rhein in the long jump as the 12th seed (19-7).

In the field events, Jayvin Clark qualified fifth in the pole vault (9-6), while Austin Martin (8-6) and Caleb Young (8-3) also earned entries. Leah Dotson leads the girls entries as the third seed in the pole vault with a clearance of 7-9.

Renee Bright qualified in two events for the girls, earning the ninth seed in the 55-meter hurdles (10.84) and the eighth seed in the 500-meter dash (1:32.33).

The girls 4×800 relay team qualified as the 12th seed with a time of 14:05.19. Team members include Sadie Schweitzer, Adrianne Dyson, Khloe Kitchen and Kendra Kitchen.

Wednesday’s competition begins at 4 p.m. with field events, followed by running preliminaries and finals throughout the afternoon and evening.
