Polk Middle track and field athletes shine against state’s best

A group of Polk County Middle School students put their track and field talents on display at the NC Runners Middle School Elite Invitational, held Saturday at Gaston Christian School in Gastonia.

The event annually brings together many of the top middle school competitors from around the state, giving athletes a chance to compete against North Carolina’s best.

And compete well, Polk County Middle’s athletes did.

Led by Lorenzo Sanchez’s victory in the 100-meter hurdles, the PCMS boys placed sixth in the team competition despite having a much smaller team than most schools.

“With the group of athletes we took we didn’t expect to win as a team, but at one point during the meet we saw that our boys were in second place,” said PCMS head track and field coach Katie Elliott. “This was very exciting considering how small of a team we had at this meet.

“Our boys ended up sixth out of 35 teams. We did not expect that at all and we’re pleasantly surprised. It was a great season and we are very proud of all of our track athletes this year.”
