Polk boys take top spot, Wolverine girls second in indoor season opener

Polk County’s boys track and field team captured the team title while the girls finished second at Wednesday’s Polk Polar Bear 1 meet at J. Alan Peoples Track.

In their indoor season opener, the Wolverine boys won with 105 points, outdistancing runner-up North Henderson’s 91. Asheville School and McDowell tied for third with 88 points each, followed by Chase (33), Christ School (28) and Madison (6) in the seven-team field.

Polk County’s girls finished second with 83 points, just behind champion Asheville School’s 86. Hendersonville (77), Madison (47), North Henderson (41), McDowell (34) and Chase (30) rounded out the field.

The Wolverines claimed nine individual event titles on the day.

Sam Rhein swept the boys throwing and jumping events, winning the shot put (39 feet, 1 inch), long jump (18-9.5) and triple jump (37-1). Danny Bradley captured both sprint events, winning the 55 meters (6.94 seconds) and 300 meters (37.48).

Amberina Jenne won the girls 1,600 meters (6:23.72) and 300 meters (50.01). Renee Bright took the 500 meters (1:40.84) and finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (11.55). Jesse Moore won the boys 55-meter hurdles (9.77) and placed 10th in the long jump (16-5).

Polk County’s boys also won the 4×800 relay (10:56.98) and 4×400 relay (3:59.28). The girls won the 4×400 relay (5:44.14) and finished third in the 4×200 relay.

Jayvin Clark finished second in the boys pole vault (8-6), while Ethan Jenne placed fifth in the 1,600 meters (5:30.09) and third in the 500 meters (1:20.88). William Finch took seventh in the 1,600 (5:47.39), Drew Young finished second in the 1,000 meters (3:36.78), Ryan Welch placed 10th in the 500 (1:27.73) and 12th in the long jump (15-1), and Logan Baird finished 11th in the 500 (1:28.55).

Austin Martin placed fifth in the pole vault (6-6), Caleb Young finished sixth (6-0) and Reese Huysman took seventh (6-0). Benjamin Winkel finished third in the shot put (30-4) and Jadyn Bramer placed 12th (23-0.5). The boys 4×200 relay team finished third.

For the girls, Khloe Kitchen placed third in the 1,600 meters (7:05.57), Sadie Schweitzer took fifth in the 1,600 (7:17.07) and third in the 1,000 meters (4:27.63), and Kendra Kitchen finished seventh in the 1,000 (5:17.94). Alaysia Hamrick placed fifth in the 55 meters (8.55) and sixth in the 300 meters (57.07). Adrianne Dyson finished 16th in the 55 meters (10.71) and 11th in the 300 (1:05.59).
