Polk County’s Gage McSwain and Harrison Waddell each earned regional championships Friday during the 1A West Track and Field Regional at Cherokee High School.
McSwain and Waddell led a Wolverine effort that resulted in five individuals and one relay team qualifying for next week’s state meet, set for Friday at North Carolina A&T University.
McSwain won the 200-meter run by the narrowest of margins, his time of 23.50 just .02 seconds better than Mitchell’s Harrison Horney.
Waddell had a bit more breathing room, his throw of 49-5 1/2 topping runner-up Jake McTaggart of Murphy by more than four feet.
Polk County’s Olivia Overholt finished second in two events – the 800 and 1600-meter runs – while Alana Jergenson placed second in the shot and Tori Thompson finished third in the pole vault. All earned spots in the state championship meet and helped the Wolverine girls place sixth in Friday’s team competition. Swain won the regional team title.
Waddell also qualified for the state meet in the discus, where he placed fourth. Teammate Braxton Edwards advanced with a third in the pole vault while Polk’s 4×100-meter relay team placed second.
The Wolverine boys placed eighth overall, with Murphy winning the team title.
Next Friday’s state meet is set to begin at 9 a.m. and will be streamed live via the NFHS Network.
