Polk County senior Ashley Scruggs threw the first no-hitter of her career on Wednesday in Polk County’s 16-0 win over Mitchell in Bakersville.

Scruggs, a four-year starter, held Mitchell hitless for five innings as the Wolverines improved to 4-3 overall, 3-2 in Western Highlands Conference play.

Polk County scored four runs in each of the first three innings, added three more in the fourth and one in the top of the fifth.

Maranda Gosnell and Autumn Owen were each 3-for-5, Morgan Stott finished 2-for-5 and Scruggs was 2-for-4 to lead the Polk County offense.

The Polk County junior varsity earned a 10-2 win to pick up its fourth consecutive victory. Head coach Jamie Thompson said the team is off to the best start in the program’s history.

Polk County returns home Friday, hosting Hendersonville in another Western Highlands Conference clash.
