Quick start helps push Cougars past Wolverines

Mountain Heritage scored three runs in each of the first two innings and pulled away with a four-run fifth to defeat Polk County 12-2 in Friday’s Western Highlands Conference softball game in Burnsville.

The Cougars (2-4, 2-2) built a 6-1 lead through two innings before Polk County cut the deficit to 6-2 in the third. Mountain Heritage added single runs in each of the next two innings before putting the game away in the fifth when Layla Worley capped a four-run rally with a grand slam home run.

Polk County took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Junie Mitchell doubled home Tory Coile. Mountain Heritage answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a steal of home and two runs scoring on errors.

The Cougars added three more in the second on a walk, two errors and a double by Addy Martens to push the lead to 6-1.

Polk County pulled within 6-2 in the third when Coile scored on an error after singling.

Coile led Polk County with two hits in three at-bats and scored both runs. Taylor Lancaster added two hits, while Aslyn Scruggs, Junie Mitchell and Kinsley Lancaster each contributed one hit. Mitchell drove in one run with her double.

Polk County (0-12, 0-6 WHC) travels to Chase on Monday for a non-conference game.
