Polk offense sizzles in season-opening win at Asheville

Polk County opened the 2025 softball season in commanding fashion Tuesday, overwhelming Asheville 15-2 in a contest shortened to five innings by run rule.

The Wolverines broke open a scoreless game with a seven-run explosion in the third inning, then added two runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth to secure the victory.

Sarah Vitale delivered a standout two-way performance for Polk County, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored. The right-hander also dominated in the circle, striking out nine Asheville batters while surrendering just four hits and two walks over five innings of work.

The Wolverines’ offense produced 13 hits, with three players collecting three or more RBI. Elizabeth Vitale went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Miya Jackson delivered a power-packed performance, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, four RBI and two runs scored.

Aslyn Scruggs finished 1-for-1 with two RBI. Kinsley Lancaster added a double, while Tory Coile, Laney Littlefield and Junie Mitchell each collected hits.

Asheville managed single runs in the third and fifth innings.

The Wolverines return to action Thursday when they travel to East Henderson for a 6 p.m. contest.
