Madison keeps share of WHC lead in topping Polk County

Madison scored three runs in the first inning and defeated Polk County 9-2 in Tuesday’s Western Highlands Conference softball matchup at Polk.

The Patriots built a 4-0 lead before Polk County scored in the second inning. Bella Lancaster walked, moved to third on Taylor Lancaster’s double and scored on Emma Hayford’s RBI single to make it 4-1.

Madison added two runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-1 before Polk County pulled within 6-2 in the fifth. Aslyn Scruggs walked, moved to third on Junie Mitchell’s single and scored with two outs on a Madison error.

The Patriots added single runs in the sixth and seventh to put the game away.

Mitchell led Polk County with two hits. Tory Coile, Scruggs, Hayford and Taylor Lancaster each contributed one hit.

Polk County (0-14, 0-7 WHC) travels to Madison (7-6, 6-0) on Thursday.
