Friday roundup: Madison softball nips Polk in extra innings

Madison rallied from a 5-1 deficit and pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth to hand Polk County a 6-5 loss Friday in Western Highlands Conference action in Marshall.

The Patriots (3-0, 2-0) trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, but scored once in that inning, then added the tying run in the sixth to force the extra frame.

It is the sixth one-run game between the two programs since 2015.

Autumn Owen homered, had three hits and drove in four runs to lead Polk County’s 12-hit attack. Karli Wood added a 3-for-4 effort and Haley Fowler finished 2-for-3.

Hannah Jennings relieved Savannah Rice in the third inning and earned the win, giving up three earned runs and striking out nine in six innings. Jennings was also 3-for-5 at the plate.

Polk County continues conference play on Tuesday, traveling to Owen.
