Early flurry propels Cougars past Wolverines

Mountain Heritage scored six runs in the second inning and defeated Polk County 14-0 in Tuesday’s Western Highlands Conference softball game at Polk.

The Cougars took a 6-0 lead in the second inning, added five more runs in the third and scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to invoke the mercy rule.

Layla Worley led Mountain Heritage’s offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run.

Aslyn Scruggs led Polk County with two hits in three at-bats. Emma Hayford added two hits in two at-bats, while Tory Coile, Junie Mitchell, Kinsley Lancaster and Camdyn Israel-Garrett each contributed one hit.

Polk County (0-10, 0-5 WHC) travels to Patton on Wednesday for a non-conference game at 5 p.m.

Mountain Heritage improved to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
