Avery scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs to rally past Polk County 9-8 in Tuesday’s Western Highlands Conference softball game in Newland.
The Wolverines carried an 8-4 lead into the seventh inning, but the Vikings rallied with five consecutive hits to complete the comeback, with Annslee Arnold’s two-run single to right driving home the winning runs.
Polk County had taken control early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Tory Coile drove in the first run with a double, Lucy Tessnair added an RBI single, Kinsley Lancaster drove in a run with a groundout and Bella Lancaster, running for Tessnair, scored on a steal of home.

Avery (2-14, 1-8) closed to within 4-3 before the Wolverines (1-16, 0-9) added a run in the sixth on Kendall Taylor’s double that scored Aubrey Bell.
The Vikings made it 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth, but Polk then extended the lead to 8-4 with three runs in the top of the seventh. Coile and Junie Mitchell each doubled, with Mitchell’s hit driving in Coile. Kinsley Lancaster followed with an RBI double, and Bella Lancaster added a run-scoring groundout.
Coile led Polk County at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Mitchell finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Aslyn Scruggs went 2-for-3 with a double, Bell was 2-for-4 with a triple and Kinsley Lancaster went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Tessnair, Kendall Taylor and Aubrey Bell also had hits for the Wolverines.
Polk County hosts Avery on Friday.
