19-run inning propels Polk Middle to road romp

Polk County Middle scored 19 runs in the second inning en route to a 26-7 victory over Apple Valley Middle in Monday’s Blue Ridge Conference softball action in Hendersonville.

The Wolverines (2-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning before Apple Valley (0-3) answered with four runs in the bottom of the first to pull within 5-4. Polk Middle then batted around multiple times in the second inning, sending 24 batters to the plate and scoring 19 runs to take a 24-4 lead.

The Lady Wolverines added two runs in the third before the game was called after three innings by run rule.

Kayla Hayford led Polk County Middle with two hits, including a triple, six RBI and two runs. Kenzie Alm added two hits including a double, three runs and an RBI, while Payton Emory scored three runs and stole four bases.

Anabelle Burrell contributed a hit, three RBI and three runs while Aubrey Champion had a hit, RBI and three runs. Kali Masters added a hit and two runs, Adalyn Painter finished with a hit, two runs and two RBI, and Arieana Jolley scored three runs and stole two bases.

Emory earned the win, pitching all three innings and allowing six hits with four strikeouts. Apple Valley pitchers combined for 15 walks and eight hit batters.

Polk County Middle hosts Brevard Middle on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
