Madison scored 10 runs in the first inning and defeated Polk County 16-2 in Thursday’s Western Highlands Conference softball matchup in Marshall.
Polk County took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Emma Hayford doubled and scored on Junie Mitchell’s RBI single. Madison answered with 10 runs in the bottom of the inning to take control, then added five more in the second to extend the lead to 15-1.
The Patriots’ first-inning rally featured a three-run home run by Morgan Gosnell and multiple doubles as Madison sent 14 batters to the plate.

Polk County (0-15, 0-8) scored its second run in the third inning when Aubrey Bell singled, advanced to third on Aslyn Scruggs’s single and scored on Mitchell’s second RBI single of the game.
Madison added a run in the fourth to complete the scoring.
Mitchell led Polk County with two hits and two RBI. Hayford contributed a double, while Scruggs, Kinsley Lancaster, AJ Jackson and Bell each added one hit.
Madison improved to 8-6 overall and 7-0 in conference play
