Polk County sits 13th in the initial release of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 3A football RPI standings.
The NCHSAA MaxPreps RPI is used to exclusively determine playoff qualifiers and seeding. The top 48 teams in the 3A rankings will qualify for the playoffs, with the top 16 teams earning a first-round bye.
The RPI formula is calculated with the help of MaxPreps and is constructed like this: (.4 x winning percentage) + (.4 x opponents winning percentage) + (.2 x opponents opponents winning percentage).

Once the 48 qualifiers are determined, the teams will be split into 24-team East and West brackets based on location. There will be eight byes in each bracket.
Louisburg currently leads the 3A RPI, followed by Eastern Randolph, Greene Central, Kenan and Hendersonville. Several teams have only played one game, which means the ratings will likely fluctuate wildly in upcoming weeks.
RPI standings for volleyball, boys soccer and girls tennis are expected to be released sometime this week.
