Polk County’s placement in the next conference alignment of North Carolina schools remains the same in the most recent draft published Friday by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s Realignment Committee.
Polk County remains in a seven-team 3A/2A conference that includes 2A schools Avery and Mitchell and 3A schools Hendersonville, Madison, Mountain Heritage and Owen. The schools were previously together in the Western Highlands Conference.
The NCHSAA realigns schools every four years into conferences, with the current process based solely on student enrollment. This will be the final draft from the Realignment Committee, which will now present the proposed conferences to the NCHSAA Board of Directors for approval. Any future appeals by schools would have to be made to the Board of Directors, who will rule on those and then vote to finalize the alignment for the 2025-29 school years.
