Overholt named Big South Libero, Freshman of the Week

2 min read

Former Polk County standout Sophia Overholt swept the Big South Conference’s defensive awards Monday, earning both Libero and Freshman of the Week honors for USC Upstate.

Overholt led all Big South liberos in total digs and digs per set last week, scooping up 54 digs at an average of 6.75 per set. The Tryon native recorded a career-high 36 digs against Gardner-Webb on Friday, one shy of USC Upstate’s single-match record and the most digs in a single match by a Big South player this season. She added 18 digs against Winthrop.

Her 36-dig performance against the Runnin’ Bulldogs set USC Upstate’s single-season record for digs by a freshman. Overholt now has 440 digs on the year.

USC Upstate (14-11, 7-5 Big South) defeated Gardner-Webb 3-1 in Friday’s match, with Overholt going toe-to-toe with the nation’s leader in total digs. Sophomore setter Kamyla Vega David dished out 48 assists and recorded her 15th double-double of the season, while freshman outside hitter Summer Kohler led the Spartans with 17 kills.

USC Upstate captured all four Big South weekly awards for the first time since joining the league and the first time as a program since 2004. Ady O’Grady earned Player of the Week honors after joining the program’s 1,000-Kill Club during Friday’s match, while Vega David took Setter of the Week honors.

USC Upstate closes its regular season Friday at home against UNC Asheville.
