2 min read

Former Polk County standout Sophia Overholt will enter her sophomore season at USC Upstate with one of the Big South Conference’s top preseason honors.

Overholt has been selected as the Big South Preseason Libero of the Year, earning the honor in voting by the league’s head coaches. She was also named to the conference’s preseason All-Conference team.

The recognition follows an impressive freshman season for Overholt, who earned honorable mention All-Big South and a spot on the league’s All-Freshman Team in 2025.

Overholt appeared in 26 matches and 100 sets for USC Upstate, leading the Spartans with 465 digs and averaging 4.65 digs per set. Her 465 digs set a USC Upstate single-season freshman record, and she also established a freshman match record with 36 digs against Gardner-Webb.

She ranked fourth in the Big South in both digs and digs per set and recorded double-digit digs in 24 matches, including eight matches with at least 20 digs and three with 30 or more. Overholt finished the season with 21 consecutive matches with at least 10 digs and was twice named Big South Libero of the Week in addition to earning one Freshman of the Week honor.

Overholt received five first-place votes and 18 points in the preseason Libero of the Year balloting.

USC Upstate was picked third in the Big South preseason team poll, behind defending conference champion High Point and Winthrop. The Spartans open the 2026 season Friday against Old Dominion.
