Bring on the midseason showdowns.
Monday and Tuesday will provide a number of key conference matchups across multiple sports for Polk County High School and Polk County Middle School teams. Nearly all teams are approaching the midpoint of their regular seasons.
Here’s a look at some of the big matchups over the next two days:

- Brevard at Polk County volleyball: Tuesday will mark the first meeting this season between the two defending state champions and current co-leaders in the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference.
It has been far from an uneventful season for both squads. Polk County, of course, lost senior Sophia Overholt to an injury earlier this season and lost a pair of games to West Henderson. Brevard also lost a key player, with senior Rafa Dabao also suffering an injury.
The Blue Devils (9-3) responded by moving libero Claire Wilson, perhaps the team’s top player, to a outside hitter spot and have won their last four matches, their losses this season to Cherokee, West Henderson and Asheville Christian Academy.
Polk County has dropped its last five matches with Brevard, its last win in the series a five-setter on Sept. 20, 2022. The winner of Tuesday’s clash at Polk County will be in great shape for at least a share of the MF7 regular-season title.
- Polk County at Hendersonville girls tennis: The Bearcats are a tennis dynasty, having won five straight state 2A team championships. No one is betting against a sixth this season, either.
Hendersonville has dropped two matches this season, losing to Asheville Christian Academy and T.C. Roberson. Polk County, meanwhile, is off to a 5-0 start, though the Wolverines have not faced a team of Hendersonville’s caliber.
Which is what makes Tuesday’s meeting at Jackson Park so intriguing. How good this season are the Wolverines, who returned everyone from last year’s squad? We’ll know a lot more about the answer to that question by Tuesday evening.
- Polk County Middle at Rugby Middle boys soccer: Rugby hasn’t lost a match this season. Polk Middle hasn’t lost since its early-season setback against Smoky Mountain Middle, winning its last six matches.
The Raiders have scored seven or more goals in three matches this season and figure to provide a stiff challenge to Polk’s defense. Rugby will also host the first meeting between the teams.
It will be an interesting week for the Wolverines as they follow up Monday’s match by hosting Apple Valley, who currently sits in third place in the Blue Ridge Conference’s East Division, on Wednesday. Polk’s hopes for a division title will depend greatly on how this week unfolds.
