Polk County's Banks Barber and the Wolverines will return to the mat Saturday for the first time in two weeks

The most useful device to keep up with local sports schedules of late? A pencil with a quality eraser.

The dual challenge of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases and the recent winter storm has kept most local athletes away from practice and competition of late. Some Polk County teams returned to practice Friday, and high school basketball and wrestling events are set for Saturday as teams swing back into action.

Polk County’s wrestling team is set to compete in the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference Tournament at Hendersonville. Action is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.

The conference meet will be the first competition in two weeks for the Wolverines, and head coach Scott Taylor said the break has offered some benefits.

“A few guys have gotten a chance to heal up some nagging injuries and a few have returned from quarantine,” Taylor said. “We should have a good tournament.

“Wrestlers are a bit different. Mentally, they are ready.”

Polk County’s basketball teams will return to the court for the first time since Jan. 14 as Patton visits. Junior varsity girls play begins at 2 p.m., with varsity games to follow. All games will stream live on NFHS Network.

The game will offer Polk County’s girls an opportunity to rebound from their first conference loss of the season at East Rutherford as a winless Patton team visits. The Panthers, though, nearly upended the Wolverines in their first meeting, a 28-23 game on Dec. 17 in Morganton.

The Patton boys currently share first place in the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference with R-S Central, though the Panthers have yet to face the Hilltoppers or Hendersonville.

Polk County will look to get back into the win column after a loss at East Rutherford, but will do so without the services of Antonio Simpson, who will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

The upcoming week will offer an opportunity for all other local winter sports teams to return to action, weather and health permitting.
