College Roundup: Overholt key contributor for USC Upstate volleyball

Sophia Overholt has made an immediate impact in her first season of college volleyball.

The former Polk County standout has played in every set of USC Upstate’s 14 matches this season, leading the Spartans with 219 digs while playing the libero position.

Overholt has been especially effective of late, recording 20 or more digs in three of her last four matches. That includes a season-high 25 digs against Northern Arizona.

Overholt currently ranks fifth in the Big South Conference in digs.

VIRGINIA-WISE VOLLEYBALL: Freshman Mia Bradley has seen her playing time continually increase this season and has moved into the starting lineup for the Cavaliers.

Bradley has appeared in 14 matches and recorded 26 kills. She posted season highs of eight kills and 12 digs in a win at Catawba.

SPARTANBURG METHODIST SOCCER: Sophomore Caroline Taylor has started 10 of the Pioneers’ 11 matches this season and has scored three goals.

Taylor notched the game winner in SMC’s Aug. 30 win over Carolina University and successfully converted a penalty kick in a Sept. 6 match at Milligan.

LENOIR-RHYNE CROSS COUNTRY: Senior Olivia Overholt posted a personal-best 5K time at Lenoir-Rhyne in the Queen City Invite on Sept. 12.

Overholt covered the course in a time of 19:36.1, placing 99th in the field. She also competed in the Converse Kick-Off on Sept. 5, finishing 22nd with a time of 20:47.7.

BELMONT ABBEY CROSS COUNTRY: Senior Tori Thompson has recorded personal bests at multiple distances this season for the Crusaders.

Thompson posted a personal-best 6K time of 26:16.7 at the Wingate Bulldog Stampede on Sept. 20, placing 65th. She also set a personal-best 5K time of 21:36.4 at the Queen City Invite on Sept. 12, the fastest time by a Belmont Abbey runner at that meet.

Thompson also competed in the Converse Kick-Off on Sept. 5, finishing 51st in a time of 22:10.3.

GARDNER-WEBB CROSS COUNTRY: Sophomore Cade Bright has competed in three meets this fall for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

Bright covered an 8K course in a time of 30:45.8 at the Brevard XC Classic on Sept. 19, placing 77th. He also competed in the Furman XC Invitational on Sept. 13, finishing the 4-mile course in 23:53.8 and placing 80th.

Bright opened his sophomore campaign at the Covered Bridge meet on Aug. 29, covering the 6K course in a time of 23:07.5 and placing 54th.

BENEDICT FOOTBALL: Redshirt freshman Azian-Antonio Santiago-Simpson has appeared in two games this season as a defensive back.

Santiago-Simpson has recorded two tackles thus far this season. He was honored earlier this year for posting a 3.0-3.9 GPA in his first year at Benedict.

AVERETT FOOTBALL: Senior running back Deaken Nodine has 15 carries for 40 yards and three receptions for 23 yards this season for the Cougars.

Nodine posted career highs of 10 carries for 29 yards in a 39-30 loss at Gallaudet.

VIRGINIA-WISE GOLF: Sophomore Reilly Yoder has competed in two fall events for the Cavaliers.

Yoder shot rounds of 82-78-78 for a total of 238 and a tie for 78th at the Southern Lakes Fall Invitational in McCormick, S.C. He also shot 75-75 for a total of 150 and a 39th-place finish at the King University Invitational at the Country Club of Bristol.
