College roundup: Huskey a winner in Gardner-Webb debut

Gardner-Webb freshman Karsyn Huskey made an impressive debut Sunday in her first college track and field event, winning the women’s 800 meters at the JDL Early Bird Invitational at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.

Huskey, who missed the cross country season with an injury, posted a winning time of 2:16.90, edging College of Charleston’s Sydney Peer (2:18.72). Huskey grabbed the lead after the first lap with a time of 30.889.

In her previous race at JDL, as a Polk County senior earlier this year, Huskey set a new school record in the 1000-meter run en route to finishing third at the 1A/2A state championship.

LENOIR-RHYNE CROSS COUNTRY: Senior Olivia Overholt closed out her career with her best performance at an NCAA regional meet.

Overholt placed 44th in the 6K at the NCAA Southeast Regionals on Nov. 8 in Wingate with a time of 23:51.78, finishing more than 40 places higher than her previous best regional finish. Lenoir-Rhyne finished 11th with 327 points.

SPARTANBURG METHODIST SOCCER: Sophomore Caroline Taylor earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors and was named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete.

Taylor scored three goals and added two assists this season. She recorded the game-winning goal against Carolina on Aug. 27 and also scored against Milligan on Sept. 6 and Johnson on Sept. 24. Her assists came in matches against Bluefield on Oct. 4 and Columbia (S.C.) on Oct. 21.

To earn NAIA Scholar-Athlete distinction, student-athletes must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Taylor was also named to the Appalachian Athletic Conference All-Academic team.

BELMONT ABBEY CROSS COUNTRY: Senior Tori Thompson finished 130th in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Southeast Regional Championship with a time of 27:06.03.

Thompson also placed 44th at the Conference Carolinas Women’s Cross Country Championship at the Ivey Redmon Complex with a time of 26:30.2.

GARDNER-WEBB CROSS COUNTRY: Sophomore Cade Bright competed in three meets this fall for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

Bright covered an 8K course in a time of 30:45.8 at the Brevard XC Classic on Sept. 19, placing 77th. He also competed in the Furman XC Invitational on Sept. 13, finishing the 4-mile course in 23:53.8 and placing 80th. Bright opened his sophomore campaign at the Covered Bridge meet on Aug. 29, covering the 6K course in 23:07.5 and placing 54th.

LENOIR-RHYNE FOOTBALL: Redshirt sophomore Angus Weaver appeared in six games at linebacker and finished with eight tackles.

Weaver posted six tackles, including one for loss, in an Oct. 25 game against Mars Hill.

AVERETT FOOTBALL: Senior running back Deaken Nodine played in all nine games, rushing 25 times for 74 yards and catching 11 passes for 66 yards.

BENEDICT FOOTBALL: Redshirt freshman Azian-Antonio Santiago-Simpson appeared in five games as a defensive back and recorded seven tackles, including two solo tackles against Virginia-Lynchburg.

MARS HILL GOLF: Sophomore Avery Harden played in two fall events, posting his best finish of 21st at the Fincastle Intercollegiate with rounds of 74 and 79.

VIRGINIA-WISE GOLF: Sophomore Reilly Yoder played in four fall events, with his best finish at the Atomic City Classic in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Yoder placed 22nd with rounds of 76 and 74.

VIRGINIA-WISE VOLLEYBALL: Freshman Mia Bradley appeared in 23 matches and 61 sets, recording 54 kills, six aces and 120 digs. Bradley posted season highs of 10 kills and 11 points against Anderson.
