Polk County’s football team will hit the road Friday while the Wolverine boys soccer squad will get a bye before a home game per 3A playoff brackets released Sunday by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
Polk County earned the top seed in the 3A West boys soccer field. That means the Wolverines will get a first-round bye and are assured of being at home until the state championship round.
The Wolverines will host their second-round game on Thursday against the winner of the West Lincoln at West Wilkes game. West Lincoln enters with an 11-10 record and is led by Edwin Ramirez, who scored 33 goals this season. west Wilkes owns a 10-11 recordand is led by freshman Colton Harris, who had 19 goals, and senior Mitchell Rangel, who had 12 goals and 15 assists.

Polk County’s football team is seeded 20th in the 3A West field and will travel to 13th-seeded East Surry for only the third meeting between the two schools. The first came on April 30, 2021, in the 1AA West Regional final at East Surry, with the Cardinals taking a 41-7 victory. Polk County also traveled to East Surry in the opening round of the 2000 playoffs as the 16th seed and upset the top-seeded Cardinals 16-14.
East Surry began this season 0-4, but rebounded to win four of its final six games. The Cardinals dropped a 54-13 decision to Mount Airy on Friday in their regular-season finale.
Sophomore Nathan Kiger leads the team in rushing with 1,023 yards. Junior quarterback JB Davis threw for a career-high 202 yards in the loss to Mount Airy and enters 86-of-174 on the season for 1,192 yards.
6-foot-3, 225-pound tight end Braxton Davis leads East Surry in receiving with 31 catches for 413 yards.
