3A playoff projections: Polk soccer with bye, football to East Surry

2 min read

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association will announce playoff pairings for football and boys soccer on Sunday afternoon.

PolkSports offers a look at what those brackets may well look like. The brackets are based on the latest NCHSAA RPI, the metric that determines what teams qualify for the playoffs and where they are seeded.

Polk County’s boys soccer team will be the top seed in the 3A West bracket, meaning the Wolverines could be at home until the state final. The Wolverines will have a first-round bye and will host a second-round match on Thursday, and it looks like that will be either West Lincoln or West Wilkes.

The current projected 3A West boys soccer bracket:

Polk County’s football team is seeded 38th overall and projects as the 20th seed in the 3A West. That will send the Wolverines to East Surry for their playoff opener.

Polk currently sits less than .002 behind Union Academy in RPI. If any changes to games affecting either team remain and Polk moves back in front of Union Academy, the Wolverines would go to Owen. But the RPI for both teams has not changed since early Saturday morning (ratings update hourly and are based on a handful of factors, so the addition of games anywhere could potentially affect both teams).
