A lot of successful performances took place Wednesday on the track at Wolverine Stadium as Polk County hosted its annual Reindeer Games indoor track and field meet.
But the best story happened away from the competition.
Competing athletes and spectators were urged to bring canned goods for entry fee and admission to the event, with all cans being donated to Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry. It’s a standard part of the Reindeer Games, conceived in 2009 by Polk County throws coach Amanda Simoncic.

This year’s event helped collect, including cash donations, more than 2,200 cans, nearly 2,000 pounds worth of food for Thermal Belt Outreach. Polk County High School accounted for 1,298 of those cans.
“From the bottom of my heart, I send a huge ‘THANK YOU’ to all who helped make this possible,” Simoncic said via email. “Without our great students, parents, teachers and coaches at PCHS, our Western NC athletes, coaches and families, none of this would have happened.”
