Polk County’s tennis season came to a close Wednesday as Hendersonville claimed a 5-1 victory in the second round of the state 3A playoffs.

The Wolverines (5-7) saw their playoff run halted by a Bearcat squad that improved to 10-2 on the season. The match, played at Hendersonville, featured several competitive individual battles but ultimately went the Bearcats’ way.

Polk County senior Cate Brown provided the Wolverines’ lone victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Anna Macdowell 6-2, 5-0 before Macdowell retired from the match. Brown’s win showcased the competitiveness that helped lead Polk County to the second round of the state playoffs.

However, Hendersonville demonstrated its depth across the remaining singles matches. Sophia Gallian secured a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles over Paige White, while Canaan Scroggs posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles against Virginia Then.

The Bearcats continued their strong showing in the lower singles positions, with Aryna Vann, Katherine Canning, and Elizabeth Shaffer each recording 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 4, 5, and 6 singles respectively. With the outcome decided after singles play, no doubles matches were contested.

A quartet of Wolverine players – Brown, White, Robinette and Then – will take part Friday in the 3A West Regional at Belmont Abbey College.
