Polk County’s tennis team secured its second victory of the season Wednesday, defeating Mountain Heritage 6-3 in Western Highlands Conference action in Burnsville.
The Wolverines (2-4) dominated singles play, winning four of six matches to build an early advantage against the winless Cougars (0-5).
Polk County’s top three singles players set the tone for the match. Cate Brown posted a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles over Makayla Jones, while Paige White followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles against Elliana Anglin. Virginia Then completed the sweep of the top positions with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Lydia Smith at No. 3.

Mountain Heritage fought back in the middle of the lineup, with Andie Barefoot claiming a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles and Calia Marchand-Wheeler earning a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 5. Polk’s Evangeline Petoia rounded out singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6.
The Wolverines sealed their victory in doubles competition, with the top pairing of Brown and White delivering an 8-0 shutout over Jones and Anglin. Then and Addie Buss secured the team win with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles. Mountain Heritage’s Wheeler and Avalon Martens claimed the final doubles match 7-5 over Leah Morton and Alexandria Smith.
The Wolverines continue WHC play on Monday, returning home to host Avery.
